How the upload time calculator works
The asymmetric reality
Cable and DSL plans advertise download and quietly multiply upload by 0.05–0.2 — a 300/20 plan uploads at a fifteenth of its download. Cloud backup, video calls, and streaming all live on the upload side. Fiber (symmetric) is the structural fix; the calculator prices the current reality first.
Backup strategy follows the uplink
The initial cloud backup is the uplink marathon: 500 GB at 20 Mbps up is ~2.5 days of saturated line. Practical plans: seed to a local drive and ship it (many services accept drives), then sync daily changes (gigabytes, not hundreds). The daily-change line in the calculator is the number that actually matters after week one.
Upload-heavy household math
Video calls (3 Mbps each), cloud-syncing folders, game streaming (upload-heavy for hosts), and smart-home cameras (1–4 Mbps each, 24/7) compete for the same uplink. A 20 Mbps upload plan supports exactly one of those comfortably — the calculator's per-item framing helps decide what the line carries.
